Órale Mural Project

Gaby Hernandez, Executive Director of Órale asked me to design and paint a mural for their downtown Long Beach offices that reflects the organizations mission, goals, and community members. We collaborated on how to visualize a all of their work while also creating a mural that can also move and grow as the organization does.

The workshop is about creating small works of art that will change and transform when part of it are shared with others. Participants created their own community art offering. These mixed media works are inspired by public postings found in places such as laundromat message boards and street corners.

Presencia de lo Invisible/ Presence of the Invisible

My approach to this concept started with research into family immigration narratives. These stories deal with themes of separation, reunion, humor, and loss.

The mural is a snapshot of a girl who was separated from her family and is in search of them with the help of her mystical coyote.

This art project is a practice in opening up discussions into our own origin stories and hopefully draw attention to the inhumane treatment of people only looking for a safe place to land.

Special Thanks to the Arts Council for Long Beach
