Jose M. Loza

My paintings combine geometric symbolism, portraits, wildlife scenes, and found colors. I begin by driving around looking for interesting lighting or color to take and place in my own work. Sometimes it is the cadmium red of a pepper from the market or the cool shadows cast by birds nesting in Bolsa Chica. Watercolor is my favorite medium to capture these impressions and bring them back home in my sketchbook. These influences give me some added context and a relationship to a time and place. The process of gathering inspiration tends to motivate the narratives in my paintings just as much as anything else. The work I create intersects somewhere between personal observations, political satire, and current events.
